More Thoughts on Same-Sex Marriages

I've been listening to the arguements about Same-Sex marriages from both sides of the spectrum and have a few thoughts of my own concerning some of the things I have heard.

Secular Government VS. Christian Government

There is a huge misconception in this country that the USA is a Christian Nation. Sorry to tell you folks, but we ARE a secular country. Congress cannot, let me repeat that, Congress cannot establish religion. Our Bill of Rights protect all citizens' religious, or lack thereof, convictions. None of our laws deal with Christianity. None of them are founded upon Christianity. Many of our Founding Fathers warned us against allowing any one religion to become a focal point in Government.

Since this is a secular government, anything that becomes a law in this country should not be determined by Christian morals or values. Instead, laws should be made that protect Civil Rights for every American citizen.

Constitutional Amendment

Bush is working hard to create a Constitutional Amendment to declare the word Marriage to mean solely between a man and a woman. Since when has the Constitution become a DICTIONARY? And what right does the FEDERAL Government have interfering in STATE laws? We do not go to the Federal Government to purchase a MARRIAGE LICENSE, we go to individual STATES.

Marriage: State Contract VS. Religious Union

One of the comments I received in my Guestbook from my last post said:

Marriage is not a contract between two people and the state. It's a covenant that is not supposed to be broken between a man, a woman, and God. There is no state involved there.

That comment was from Diarylander, "lost-chicken", and I just want to take a moment to comment on this.

For one thing, this is NOT, as I said before, a CHRISTIAN NATION. There are hundreds if not thousands of various other religions in this country, many of which do not believe in the Christian God or any God for that matter. As such, it is not right that people who do not believe in Christianity be forced to adhere to Christian values and morals. Lost-Chicken, you can deny that Marriage is a contract between two people and the State, but that will not make it go away. It IS a contract. Try getting married in your Christian Church without a MARRIAGE LICENSE issued by the State and your marriage will be null and void.

Civil Rights

This entire thing is about being fair in America to all citizens. Not just those who adhere to Christian values and morals. Everyone should receive the exact same protections and privilages as everyone else in this country. To do otherwise is to discriminate against a whole group of people. Discrimination is an UGLY act against people.

Final Thoughts

Finally, I am disgusted that people feel so threatened by Gays and Lesbians that they have to be this hateful and deny these people their CIVIL RIGHTS. Keep your noses out of their bedrooms and mind your own business!
