Yes, there is such a thing as a considerate smoker. That would be you, and not the people who live below us. Last winter, they were pretty considerate when I cc'd them on a note to the landlord about the smoke coming up through the floors and potentially killing our birds. This year...well, I talked about that a bit in an entry earlier, called "Damn, she's back to her opinions again." I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a joy to go out in California and not have to breathe all the smoke at restaurants and clubs. It really does bother my eyes and sinuses, and it sets Dan's allergies into the stratosphere. But what you do in your own home is your business.

I totally agree with you in everything you wrote. I, like you, am a considerate smoker. Rock on your soapbox sista!

I smoke, and even before I did, I felt the same way. Someone would be smoking and I didn't like it, I got my ass up and moved... without a word. Because my legs work and I was the one inconvenienced... so I got up and moved. Now, I do smoke, and unless I get there after someone, I was here first and if you don't like it, move! They just passed a law here (Florida) banning smoking in restaurants. First of all, I go outside anyway, and second, if you don't like someone smoking where you eat, maybe you should just stay at home... or shit... go to a restaurant or whatever that has seperate seating, or outdoor seating. If you let it piss you off... what good will it do you with smoke still in your face??

There is MUCH to be said for considerate smokers. I myself know a few. It is the many inconsiderate smokers out there that cause the problem. Not just for non-smokers, but for other smokers. Banning smoking in public places wouldn't be an issue if every smoker were considerate of non-smokers. But they aren't, and non-smokers are fed up with having the smoke shoved down their throats too. As far as restaurants go, sepereate seating is fine, I think you should be allowed to smoke in bars, but in family-oriented restaurants, that's where it should be limited or eliminated. It's one thing to be inconsiderate of others, but it's another thing entirely to endager children's health.
