Why Is THIS Even an Issue?

Same-Sex Marriages

I cannot believe all the hoopla over this topic. It shouldn't even be an issue! It should be a no-brainer, but for some reason, the ultra-religious right have made this a focal point right now. Since some feel compelled to keep it in the forefront of the news, here are my thoughts on the (non)issue:

1) Gays and Lesbians getting married does not interfer with my marriage vows.

Some people have argued that allowing gays and lesbians to marry hurt the traditional role of marriage. WTF? Traditional role of marriage? Marriage is a LEGAL contract between two people and the STATE. If you think differently, try to prove that you are married without going to the STATE and asking for a MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE. Try to get married ANYWHERE in this country without that contract between you and the STATE. So how the hell does allowing gays and lesbians to marry hurt the role of marriage?

Oh yes, I know the ultra-religious right pretend that marriage is something more than just a contract between two people and the State. They seem to think it is some kind of divinely inspired creation between them and GOD. And pResident Bush wants to amend the Constitution to say JUST THAT. Sorry Mr. Bush, but this is STATE Law and NOT Federal Law! Wasn't there a time that Republicans believed in State Law and detested anything that interfered with State Law? Where oh Where did the REAL Republicans GO? Oh, that's right, they have been NEO-CONNED!

2) This is not even just a Gay and Lesbian Issue, it is a CIVIL RIGHTS issue!

I remember reading an ancient document somewhere that says something to the effect of "All Men are Created EQUAL". Oh yes, I do believe that is from the "Declaration of Independence"! Funny how something that was written to declare independence from England has been overlooked so many times in this country (of course, we all really know that the whole declaring independence from England was really so that White Male landowners could get out of paying their taxes to England, but I digress!). Blacks had to fight for that EQUAL status. Women had to fight for that EQUAL status. And now, Gays and Lesbians are having to fight for this EQUAL status.

Again, this should be a NO-BRAINER! Equal means EQUAL! It does not mean "only if you are Christian, White, Straight, and MALE"! Gays and Lesbians deserve nothing less than every other citizen in this country. EQUALITY! They deserve every protection afforded the rest of us under our Constitution, INCLUDING Marriage!

The way this country is treating Gays and Lebsians is the same way Blacks were treated. Get to the back of the BUS, Homos! Gays and Lesbians are being DEHUMANIZED. They are being DISCRIMINATED against. They are being treated like SECOND CLASS CITIZENS. And this is NOT acceptable in a country of EQUALITY!

3) The REAL reasons for this Non-Issue.

I have a couple of my own theories behind why Gays and Lesbians are being treated this way:

a) Single people in this country pay HIGHER taxes. By not allowing Gays and Lesbians the same privilages of married status, it is forcing them to remain classified SINGLE and forcing them to pay higher taxes. More taxes mean more money for the government to spend on their WAR MACHINE!

b) By keeping Gays and Lebsians from marrying, it keeps this country from admitting that we are a diverse country with diverse sexual preferences. The Ultra-Religious Right like to classify Gays and Lesbians with all the other pervs out there. I have heard Gays and Lesbians likened to child molestors and pedofiles. WTF?!? Anyone who has ever had Gay and Lesbian friends know that these are loving, kind people who are by NO MEANS perverted. The U-RR even try to say that by granting marriage to Gays and Lesbians would open the door to allowing other perverted marriage unions like Older people to the Underaged, People to Animals, and People to Inanimate Objects. (No, I am NOT making this shit up!) Why in the world would allowing loving couples like Gays and Lesbians marry open the door to other perverted marriages? This is just another way the U-RR try to take something that would be beautiful and distort it into something disgusting. You would think that the U-RR would have more important things to do (like getting their own perverted asses into Heaven) than harp on perversions that have NOTHING to do with Gays and Lesbians.

Those are my thoughts on this whole NON-ISSUE. I am proud of the Mayor in San Francisco for granting marriage liscenses to the Gay and Lesbian community. I am proud of each and every Gay and Lesbian friend that I have. I love them all dearly and cannot wait til the day that they share my equal status of MARRIAGE!
